The Sinking of Venice

Venice is constantly at danger because of rising water levels. On occasion parts of st marks square can recieve some flood water. Right now this water is not at a dangerous level, it can be crossed easily by taking your shoes off, and is only several inches deep, most of the time resembling large puddles. Scientists continue to look for a solution to Venice's problem.

The Gates

The most agreed with solution so far is to build gates to control the level of water in the lagoon. Since the venetian islands lie in a lagoon, this is a possible task. A lagoon is a body of water only somewhat open to the sea. There are three point of entry to the lagoon. These three points would have to have the gates installed. The gates would prevent any damage and allow for a difference in water height for the lagoon and sea of up to 6 meters. They would take 30 minutes to open and 15 minutes to close. They would cost 1.9 billion to complete and take over 8 years.
